Once used as our primary means for fire detection, lookouts have been replaced by airplanes and cell phones. In the summer of 1999, Mason Butte and Whiskey Butte were torn down. The remaining towers, Elk Butte and Bertha Hill, are staffed only in high fire danger situations.Click below for history and pictures of our fire detection towers.
