Elk Butte
5 miles northeast of Elk
River, ID
Elevation 5824 feet above sea level
Listed on the National Historic
Lookout Register, Elk Butte was first used as a camp lookout in 1912. A wooden
platform tower and log cabin were built in 1918. A few years later, the
cabin was set on fire by hunters and burned to the ground. The cabin
was rebuilt in 1926 and is still standing today. A 30' wooden tower was built
in 1933. In 1948 the current tower, an army-surplus 80' steel tower, was erected
to replace the wooden structure. Today, the tower is used only in emergency
situations.
